Rep. Karen Bass defeats billionaire to win LA mayor’s race

LOS ANGELES — Rep. Karen Bass has become the first woman elected mayor of Los Angeles, defeating billionaire developer Rick Caruso who waged the most expensive campaign in the city’s history.

The six-term congresswoman will lead a city simmering with anger over the rising cost of living, homelessness and recent displays of corruption and racism at City Hall.

She is the second Black person to win the mayor’s seat in Los Angeles, which has a painfully divisive history demonstrated most recently by leaked audio of three City Council members using racist and disparaging language as they discussed manipulating voting districts.

Caruso, a real estate developer now registered as a Democrat, dropped more than $100 million of his personal fortune on the campaign.
